Lately, I’ve been reflecting on the idea of imperfection and how it plays such a profound role in our lives. At Sweet Bee Artisan Boards, Shawn and I have found ourselves drawn to rustic lumber—wood that many would consider flawed or imperfect. But as we’ve worked with these boards, I’ve come to see them as a powerful analogy for our own journeys, both as individuals and as partners.
Seeing the Beauty in What’s Overlooked

Rustic lumber is often passed over because of its natural imperfections—cracks, knots, saw marks, and the like. But to us, these “flaws” are what make the wood truly unique. They tell a story, much like the experiences and challenges that shape who we are. Just as God embraces us with all our imperfections, working within us to reveal our true beauty, we’ve learned to embrace these boards, seeing the potential hidden within their rough exteriors.
Each piece of wood we select goes through a process of transformation, and in many ways, it mirrors our own paths. We’re all works in progress, full of imperfections that need care, attention, and a little bit of shaping to reveal our best selves.
The Process of Transformation
Working with these boards has become a kind of meditation for us—a way to connect with something deeper and more meaningful. It’s a process that’s taught us a lot about patience, care, and the beauty of transformation:

- Choosing the Right Board: Just as we’re learning to accept ourselves and each other, flaws and all, we start by selecting each piece of wood with care. We don’t shy away from the knots or cracks; instead, we look for the potential in every board, much like we strive to see the potential in ourselves.
- Shaping and Refining: The boards are then measured and cut, a process that reminds me of the times in our lives when we need to make adjustments, realign ourselves, and find a better path forward.
- Repairing the Cracks: Filling the cracks and smoothing out the rough edges of the wood is like healing old wounds or making peace with our past. It’s a necessary step in becoming stronger, both for the wood and for us.
- Nourishing and Protecting: Conditioning the wood is essential before it can be etched and finished. It’s similar to how we need to nourish our souls, protect our hearts, and prepare ourselves for the challenges ahead.
- Revealing the Beauty: The laser etching process, where parts of the wood are burned away to reveal a design, is a powerful metaphor for how life’s trials can bring out our true beauty. Sometimes, it’s the things we endure that shape us into who we’re meant to be.
- Leaving Our Mark: Finally, we burn our logo into each board, a small mark that signifies the care and craftsmanship that went into it. It makes me think of how our experiences leave marks on us, shaping us and reminding us of where we’ve been. of our lives.
A Reflection on Our Journey
This journey with Sweet Bee Artisan Boards has been more than just a business venture for Shawn and me—it’s been a journey of personal growth and transformation. We’ve learned to embrace the imperfections in ourselves and in each other, seeing them not as flaws, but as opportunities for growth and deeper connection.
As we work on our newest creation, a piece that honors the memory of beloved pets (a preview of which is below), I’m reminded of the love and care that goes into each step of the process. Just like these boards, we’re all being shaped and refined, and it’s the imperfections that make the final piece truly beautiful.
I’m excited to share this piece with you, not just as a product, but as a reflection of the journey we’re on—a journey of embracing imperfection, finding beauty in the unfinished, and allowing ourselves to be transformed in the process.
Thank you for being part of this journey with us. Your support and encouragement mean more than words can express.eces of art with you, each one carrying the story of transformation and the beauty found in imperfection.

With love,
Phoebe 💛
