Meet Mayra.

Β One of our littler and bravest guests, I first met Mayra when she was admitted to the hospital with cerebral malaria (a severe form affecting the brain) a month prior. Few thought she was going to make it, but as one can see here…she absolutely did.Β

From scared little girl to fearless survivor, she quickly became an inspiration to those caring for her.Β Bonding over children’s songs and Dum Dums (green apple was her favorite), ourΒ friendship grew, and she quickly became a ray of light in my day.

Here, she is pictured at one of her follow-up appointments with—what else—
—but a green apple Dum Dum.Β

Awakening.

A mare among king’s chariots,
a lily amidstΒ the thorns,
She is a dove hidden in cleft of rocks
sheltered fromΒ the morn.

But castΒ one glance uponΒ herΒ eyes,Β
and spice flows forth with wakened winds.
Come my love, toΒ my field, he says,
Rise up and come within.

LiftedΒ are plaits of ornaments
that shieldedΒ scars beneath.
RentΒ is the veil that guardedΒ her
fromΒ vulnerabilities unsheathed.

She is a cluster of henna flowers
denuded by theΒ Foehn,
A hearthΒ dimmed, itsΒ fire quenched,
withinΒ which embersΒ now burn.
